Born in London, England, William Devenish came to Canada in 1794, married Jane Webster at Niagara in 1800, and settled here on an 80 hectare farm lot in the forest in 1803. A carpenter, he built the first frame barn in Scarborough in 1807. He served for twenty-seven years as assessor, tax collector and commissioner for the township prior to its incorporation, and also as a Justice of the Peace until his death in 1856.
